Georg Herbert Endress: Charismatic pioneer
While anecdotes from him and about him fill volumes, it is still unclear to many what it was that kept driving Georg Herbert Endress to new frontiers. Where did the Swiss citizen find the energy to build his company from modest beginnings into an internationally reknowned corporation within five decades - and how did he manage to keep it a family business in the best sense of the word?
Portrait of Georg Herbert Endress

It is without doubt Georg H. Endress' endless energy and his enormous drive that drove Endress+Hauser to grow and develop over more than 50 years. Even though 'GHE', as he is known internally, retired from active day-to-day business years ago, the special 'Spirit of Endress+Hauser' which he established, is ever-present and carefully nurtured.  Today, the company belongs to his eight children and the Georg H.  Endress Foundation which the founder established..

What was it that really drove him on? No one can look into a person's heart and he has not yet written his autobiography. We can only guess. He is definitely a true entrepreneur as described by Joseph Schumpeter in 1912: "A man of action” whose main characteristics are "firstly, the energy of business and secondly, a special way of motivating people”.

These and all the other characteristics which Joseph Schumpeter, a pioneer of modern economics, attributes to a successful entrepreneur, certainly apply to GHE, but they don´t explain the whole story. Nor does the influence of his dominant father - this may help to explain the beginnings but not the reason why this relentless drive for excellence was sustained for more than four decades.

Ovious to all who knew him and to those still associated with him, it is his charisma - his ability to bind people to him emotionally and to lead by example in such a way that companions identify with his visions and his ideals, inspiring them to work over and above what is expected. Endress+Hauser's dynamic growth and innovative accomplishments over the years are linked to the names of many such companions

Georg H. Endress has paid thanks to many persons because he has always known that it is the people at Endress+Hauser, their identification with the vision, strategies and objectives of their founder that make this company so unique in the eyes of its customers around the world. The many thousands of Endress+Hauser employees in turn (and many more besides), are aware of the great debt they owe this visionary pioneer.
