Level monitoring in ship storage tanks

It is a proven fact that barges need the least energy for transporting one ton of cargo over a distance of one hundred kilometers. Inland water navigation also counts as the most secure transportation system. Barges travel steadily on well developed waterways, with a large safety distance to people. These are arguments speaking for a stronger and significant involvement of inland water transportation to solve future traffic problems.

Field of application

To operate economically, however, the barges must be modern and efficient. To this end, a important customer from Germany planned an upgrade of his tankship following requirements:

Clearly arranged data presentation of ship information
Easily structured data acquisition and editing concept
Generation of loading / off-loading reports
Draft and elevation indication

Automated procedure

The Endress+Hauser visualization software Ship View serves to display level, pressure and temperature in tanks. At the same time, draft as well as height above water are indicated continuously on a web client. For each tank, product name for the contained medium is freely selectable. Levels of storage tanks are indicated in tons. Exact mass evaluation is achieved by a temperature-compensated density measurement. The corresponding temperature coefficient is freely configurable for each medium via a table. User management enables comfortable witching between different operators.

Device integration

26 measuring devices from Endress+Hauser are installed in the hazardous area:

7 Levelflex M
7 Cerabar M
2 Cerabar S
5 TR11(resistance thermometers)
5 Liquiphant M (overfill protection)

The signals are displayed on two PCs in the safe area via active barriers, isolating amplifiers and a controller. Additionally, Levelflex M signals are indicated locally on the process displays.

Operation

Ship View offers visualization of level, pressure, temperature as well as draft and height above water. The system also generates loading and off-loading reports. This feature allows the configuration of loading and off-loading point, steersman, traveling number, substitute loading point and ship name as well as the generation of current time and date stamps.
