Reliable level measurement in the main condenser - hotwell

The steam condenser plays an important role in all modern thermal power stations. Its main purpose is to condense the exhausted steam from low pressure turbine and convert it into water so that it could be reused in boiler as feedwater. The temperature decrease of the cold source increases the thermal efficiency of the cycle. At the end, the vacuum is key to generate more power, extending the usefulness of the steam in the turbine. How do you address vacuum issues and level gauge maintenance?

Challenges of the traditional dp level

  • dp transmitters cannot reliably monitor levels in the tank when inconsistencies in the high vacuum/low pressure condenser are present

  • Wet-legs and fill heights in the legs can vary widely making it difficult to get a reading during start-up

  • Displacers are also affected by vibration and turbulence

  • Mechanical parts can give false readings

  • Maintenance costs can be expensive

Therefore, reliability at all times is mandatory and measurement equipment needs to be easy to test and maintain.

Guided wave radar - an alternative to dp level and displacer

  • High-frequency radar impulses allows the guided wave radar to operate independent of vacuum

  • No moving parts meaning low maintenance - your maintenance costs are minimized and measurement results improved

  • If displacer chambers are installed, you can easily replace them by removing the displacer transmitter and installing the guided wave radar instead, no vibration impact.
